Perhaps the most raw, innocent music is felt through the country genre. For decades, people have listened to the sweet harmonies of country music for different reasons. Some want to hear the stripped innocence of the acoustic sounds, while others want to be transported back to a time, particularly one that the song is speaking of. Country music has a way of drawing people into the lyrics, while using the compositions as a backdrop. While many people feel that country is meant to be listened only by “southerners”, people all over the world have come to appreciate the simplicity and incorruptibility of country music. Many artists have attempted and succeeded to bring the country genre back into mainstream music. Some of these artists include Tim McGraw, Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, and Rascal Flatts. Classic country music dates back, even reaching Elvis Presley, who actually started his successful career singing country. It is ironic to think that the “King of Rock” started out singing country music, but it is what fueled his singing career.
Classic country music is meant to not only be listened to, but understood. The stripped lyrics and music are what make country the phenomenal genre it is.

Classic country music has had influence on many popular artists, but it has not been that overwhelming lately. You can hear some classic tones in the music of Josh Turner and Jason Aldean, but you also have some popular influence as well. LeAnn Rimes’ style has evolved since her breakout song “Blue,” which was eerily reminiscent of Patsy Cline’s vocals. The influence of artists like Hank Williams, Sr., George Jones, Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris and Don Williams are strong in artists of today.Didn’t catch that? This explains it. Gretchen Wilson, Rascall Flatts, Reba McEntire, George Strait and Alan Jackson keep things mostly country. Although Gretchen Wilson and Rascall Flatts bring on the pop edge every once in a while, the country twang is still present. Josh Turner’s take on Don William’s “I Wouldn’t Be A Man” is exceptionally classic country. Then again, Jason Aldean’s “Dirt Road Anthem” holds some classic country elements while adding some segments of rap to it. While classic country is far from dead, many artists have simply evolved into more contemporary country fashion. Taylor Swift is a great example of this. Swift has not abandoned her country roots altogether as seen in “Tim McGraw” and “Teardrops On My Guitar.” Some of her latest work, however, including “Story Of Us” has a more contemporary feel. Without classic country she would not be where she is today, just like many other artists.

What you can learn about country music today is that is stands the test of time, but this is not a new lesson from country music. In the essence of country music is the roots that it has in traditional folk from the earliest American historical period. It takes bits of our history and the music that embodies it, then reinvents it again and again. In the modern era, almost all country music has absorbed the influences of jazz, blues, rock and pop as well. Country has itself made the transitions from stage crafted musicianship and entered into the well orchestrated world of studio engineered mastery. Is this new to you? Catch up here It also was launched into the age of electrified instruments, high tech stage show amphitheaters and the worldwide television music networks. With this new era of technology saw all new breeds of artists, ethnic diversity and more women in the industry than ever before. Country has also been influenced by things in modern history like the American civil rights movement, the various sides of war protest and the reborn modern patriotism since 911. In the end there are only two things to say, nothing changes without country music and nothing changes country music itself.

Like many other music genres out there, country music has been lucky enough to experience a truly great history. Coming from a combination of Blues, slave music and folk songs, country music has grown into one of the biggest and most beloved musical genres currently in existence. There are many artists who keep the genre alive and though by definition country music has become more “pop friendly,” it is still appreciated by many of the same fans who helped to make it big. It has also enjoyed a large base of artists who have become almost as important as many historical figures throughout the world.

Artists like Hank Williams and Chet Atkins helped bring country music into the limelight. After them, the line continued with Johnny Cash, Merl Haggard, Willie Nelson and even Elvis Presley to a degree. These are the musicians who made it possible for modern guys like Alan Jackson and Garth Brooks to do what they love for fans each and every day. Without many of the greats who paved the way, it’s possible that country music might have eventually fallen to the wayside and disappeared like so many genres of music that came before and after.
